We repair the headphones ourselves

Sooner or later, each of us faces such a situation: recently purchased regular headphones for a phone or MP 3-player broke again, and in the drawer of the table there are more than one pair of such products ... As a rule, in one instance of the headphones the speakers fail, in the other - the cord is circled near the connector, and, thus, it is possible to make one out of several faulty devices, but one working one. It is this process that will be reflected in the proposed article.

Before us are three copies of headphones. The first copy is fully operational and was not in operation, but is not equipped with a TRS-type connector (or, as they say, a mini-jack) and is a headset accessory with a built-in microphone. Headphones located in the middle have a broken wire at the input of the connector, in the latter there is a problem with the speakers, but the cord is working, and the “new” headphones will be assembled on the basis of this cord.

With the help of a thin and fairly sharp knife, we open the cases of the head phones. Since in the described case, in addition to the faulty speakers, there is no cover for one of the headphone cases, the cases themselves will have to be replaced.

We cut off the defective speakers and remove the insulation from the wires, leaving the bare ends about a centimeter long. We clean and vein the wires of the wires (the length of the tinned section may be within 2-3 mm). Using the tester, we again verify that the cord is working and find out which wire to solder the left speaker and to which right speaker (if there is a corresponding marking on the headphone cases). The common (mass) wire of both channels is connected to a cylindrical contact located directly at the base of the connector housing, the “+” of the right channel with the middle contact, and the “+” of the left channel with the end contact.

When choosing speakers from several headphones, you need to keep in mind that the resistance of their coils must be the same, otherwise you will be uncomfortable due to the different volume of the channels and differences in frequency characteristics. This parameter can range from a dozen and a half to 50-60 Ohms - the resistance of the speakers shown in the photo, for example, is 41 Ohms.

We put on the wires of the speaker housing. To prevent wire breakage when using headphones, we fix the wires in the cases with knots.

Solder the wires to the speakers. The polarity of the wire connection does not matter much, but the phasing must be observed necessarily, i.e. the mass and signal wires on both speakers should be soldered equally. Failure to comply with this condition will lead to the fact that one speaker will “beat” forward, and the second - backward, this will not affect the sound quality in the best way.

We close the cases of the headphones and check the quality of their work.
Of course, there are times when the purchase of new headphones is inevitable, but sometimes such a repair justifies itself - for example, you really like the cases of broken headphones or their excellent sound (compared to others) ...
