Manual sharpening requires skills and perseverance, which are often lacking. Without proper experience, trying to sharpen a blade is difficult to maintain the same, and most importantly the correct angle. As a result, you can spend hours on pointing a sharp edge, without achieving a result, but only reducing the body of the blade. However, there is a very interesting and effective method that allows sharpening according to a makeshift pattern - a device.

Will need

In the process you will need:
  • a piece of plastic decorative corner 20x20;
  • 2 magnets from headphones droplets;
  • Super glue;
  • protractor;
  • marker;
  • mounting knife or scissors.

Manufacturing fixtures

The device is a small flag that does not directly contact the grindstone, so the use of a plastic corner is quite sufficient for its manufacture. Naturally, marking is required to make an accurate template.

You will need a piece of angle 40-50 mm long. Stepping back on the left, on the template it is necessary to mark a distance of 10-15 mm, after which from the obtained point to form the necessary sharpening angle, going to the end of the corner. The angle is selected individually depending on what type of knife you need to sharpen. It is built using a protractor. For a kitchen blade, it’s 25-30 degrees. The template is cut along the lines with a mounting knife or scissors.

Next, on the inside of the flag, you need to glue 2 magnets. On PVC, this is conveniently done with superglue.

How to sharpen

The device is fixed with magnets on the blade of the knife close to the butt.

The sharpening principle is very simple. It is necessary to lay the grindstone and attach a knife with a flag to it. When side light hits, the pattern creates a shadow. It must be parallel to the line of clearance between the flag and the grindstone. If the sharpening angle increases, then the lines converge, and if it decreases, they diverge.

Having such a landmark, you can fix the right angle before each movement and lead the knife correctly. If the blade is long, then if desired, it is possible to fix several templates on it at once and conduct visual control of the angle along its entire length.
Using such a device, each wiring can be done correctly. In this case, sharpening will be reduced many times over. Working by eye, you can remove the output edge with a careless movement. A check mark will help minimize such risks.
