In this review, the author shows homemade yews for installation on a drilling machine.

To make such a yew, the master used blanks of sheet metal with a thickness of 4 mm and a profile pipe 20 * 40 mm.

From the profile pipe, the author made two clamping jaws (movable and fixed), guides and a slider of the carriage.

From sheet metal it will be necessary to make overlays for sponges, a back support plate and clamping levels (upper and lower).

As a lead screw, the author used a piece of a stud with a diameter of 16 mm and a length of 210 mm.

The screw nut is half the extended M16 nut. And the lead screw lock is made of 1 mm thick steel plate.

The author made the fastening elements of the nut locally in order to ensure alignment of the lead screw hole of the movable jaw and nut, and thus to avoid misalignment of the lead screw.

Yew Design Features

Steel plates - plugs are inserted and welded from the ends of the clamping jaws.

In a movable sponge at a distance of 15 mm from the upper edge in one wall, the author drilled a hole with a diameter of 11.5 mm under the lead screw.

A 5 mm thick steel plate is welded inside the sponge. It is an emphasis for the lead screw.

The master welded the back support plate to the two guides (from the profile) from the end. When welding, all angles were set. The distance between the guides is equal to the width of the slider.

At the next stage, a fixed clamping jaw was welded to the support plate and guides.

After that, a movable sponge was drawn to the fixed sponge, and a slider was welded to it. The upper clamping bar is welded to the slider.

4 holes with a diameter of 6 mm were drilled in the bottom wall of the slider. Inside, opposite the holes, M6 nuts are welded.

When assembling, the lower pressure bar will be attached to the slider. See the photo below.

On the lead screw, on the opposite side of the pin, the author welded a 20 mm long sleeve made of a ½ inch water pipe. The hole for the handle is drilled with a diameter of 6.5 mm.

Yew supports were made from an angle of 20x20 mm - the grooves in them were cut under the M8 bolts.
