A standard vernier caliper can measure the internal and external dimensions of various parts and workpieces. However, if the parts have a small rim (a plastic bucket) or, conversely, a neck, like a can, then measure it, the wall thickness will not work.

In general, for such purposes, special tools for measuring are provided: they are called - calipers for external grooves. However, not everyone has them.

Therefore, the author decided to make a do-it-yourself version of such a caliper with his own hands. First of all, it is necessary to cut off part of the sponges with a grinder. It’s a pity, of course, to spoil a good tool, but in this case the author chose just such a “barbaric” method.

The main stages of work

At the next stage of finalizing the tool, an external cage from the bearing will be required. It is necessary to make a small cutout in the width of the lips of the caliper. And then this part is welded to the jaws.

After that, carefully clean the resulting welds. The ring must be cut with a grinder or drill in the lower part, so that the sponges can be parted to the sides. The edges will need to be sharpened a bit.

For details on how to make the finalization of a conventional caliper with your own hands, we recommend that you look in the video on our website.
