Wooden file handles tend to dry out and crack, so sometimes they have to be changed. Often, new handles do not serve in the best way, as they are whipped up from under-dried wood. Since the file shanks are clogged in them, they strongly break down the fibers, which causes cracks. Consider a few tips to help make your pens stronger and more durable.

Materials:

  • chopping stalk;
  • plastic bottle;
  • wood glue;
  • sawdust.

Pen making

An excellent material for the manufacture of pens is a handle from a chopper or shovel. It is dry, cheap, and its length is enough to assemble handles for a dozen files. Cuttings, especially for choppers, have a smooth surface and optimal thickness, so they fit well in the hand.

So that the handle does not break during operation and does not crack, it will require a cap in the form of a ring. In its quality you can use the neck of a plastic bottle. It is sawn off with a hacksaw for metal.

A cut of the handle is thicker than the neck of the bottle, so the handle must be shaved and sanded. If there is a lathe, then this can be done in a minute.

Reducing the diameter of the workpiece by the length of the neck, it is stuffed on top. The cap should go in tight, then it definitely will not fly off. It is advisable to grease the stalk with carpentry glue before planting. Protruding glue can be erased with sawdust.

The resulting workpiece must be sanded at the ends, making it smooth. If the handle does not fit well in the palm, then it can be sharpened a little to a smaller diameter.

Then, a hole for mounting the web is drilled in the blank. For this, a drill bit slightly thinner than the diameter of the file shank is used.

Since the shank is pointed, the bottom of the hole will not be completely filled. Therefore, it is necessary to pour sawdust into it and pour them on top with carpentry glue.

While the glue is not absorbed into the filings, you need to fill the handle onto the file. The pressed mass is compressed at the bottom of the hole, so it does not interfere.

When it freezes, it will prevent loosening of the canvas. The straight spacing of the tree with the shank during filling will occur only at the place of crimping with the cap, so the handle will not crack.

If the handle is saturated with oil, it will cease to absorb moisture, which will prevent the appearance of cracks. The assembled file in this way will not fall out of the handle even after decades.
