To create a do-it-yourself robot, you need the Lego MindStorms NXT constructor. It incorporates the latest robotics technology. Such kits are now entering Russian schools through the Federal State Educational Standard. On their basis, children assemble various designs of robots from scratch, using their imagination and creative ideas.
Create an all-terrain vehicle
We start by selecting the parts necessary to create an automated tracked all-terrain vehicle with remote control. By the way, they are almost the same as in the lego constructors that parents buy for their children at home.
Stage 1 Assembly of tracks.
We take 3 medium rectangular parts and 3 more a little smaller, connect them. Using the "studs" we attach 2 discs and pull the rubber track.
In the same order we collect the second caterpillar.
2 stage. Drive assembly
From three gears of different sizes we assemble a gear transmission.
Then we attach it to the interactive servomotor, which guarantees the accuracy of the movements of the robot.
Now you need to attach the "square" gears.
The transfer is ready.
3 stage. Track connection with caterpillars.
To connect the servomotor to the tracks, we make a superstructure from the corner parts and connect the motor housing to the base of the track.
We do the same with the second.
The track disc is connected using a stud with a servomotor.
Now, as soon as the engine turns on, the caterpillar begins to move. In the same way we assemble the second design.
4th stage. The basis for stiffening the entire structure.
From this set of parts (PHOTO 9) using the corners we connect the assembled structures with the tracks.
5 stage. Installing an NXT Power Supply
NXT is the brain of the robot, an intelligent, computer-controlled Lego element that allows the MindStorms robot to come to life and perform various actions.
For normal operation of the NXT, you must insert 6 alkaline batteries type FF / LR6. Using small pins, we fasten the NXT to the base of the all-terrain vehicle.
To strengthen the model from above, we connect both motors with a “crossbar".
6 stage. Installing an ultrasonic sensor.
An ultrasonic sensor allows the robot to see, measure the distance to the object and respond to movement. He joins the off-road vehicle model with a 6-wire cable. We connect one end to the sensor, and the other to one of the NXT input ports.
Servo motors must also be connected using the same cables to the NXT.
Now you need to write the original program on the computer and use the USB cable to connect the NXT to it, load the software into our model. Now she will be able to move, go around visible obstacles, and also overcome them: climb a step about 5 cm high.
To program the robot, you can do without a computer: this can be done using the submenu "Program NXT", i.e. directly on the device itself.
The kit also has a number of sensors, the use of which helps the robot to sense external stimuli and respond to them, detect light and distinguish colors.
The model is controlled using Biuetooth from a computer or phone without using wires or cables. This helps with remote monitoring.
What exactly to create: a car, a human robot, or something else - the model author chooses, fantasizing.
Of course, classes in robotics will not lead to the fact that all children will want to become programmers, robotics, engineers, researchers. But they will give them general scientific training, and will contribute to the development of their thinking, logic, mathematical and algorithmic abilities, and research skills.
By the way, for adults, too, such classes can be interesting and useful.
