Not every home workshop or garage has a powerful vice in which it is possible to clamp steel round pipes of large diameter or, for example, a profile of 100x100 mm, as well as other parts and large workpieces.

However, this problem can easily be solved with the help of a home-made device, which can conditionally be called a universal vice with a vertical clamp. For their manufacture, you can use scraps of metal, which are usually lying under your feet.

The main stages of work

First of all, it is necessary to make the foundation of the entire structure - a piece of the channel, the inverted sole upside down, will perfectly cope with this task.

At the base of the channel at a distance of about 1-2 cm from the edge, it will be necessary to weld “ears” made of pieces of sheet metal, and between them, using a bolt and nut, fix a piece of a round pipe.

As a result, we got a “landing socket” into which a threaded steel shaft is inserted - a nut with plates attached on its sides is screwed on it. A long piece of pipe is welded to these plates.

In the middle of the pipe, a swivel is welded to a piece of square that acts as a stop. From the steel corner, two clamping jaws must be made: one is attached to the end of the pipe, the second is welded edge down to the channel base.

A through hole must be made in the upper part of the steel shaft so that the knob can be installed.

To summarize

At the last stage of work, we interconnect the main structural elements and as a result we get universal desktop vice with a vertical clamp.
